Do you know you can double your blessing by thanksgiving? Blessing is good, but a double blessing is even better. Don’t you think so?
Do you know that the Chinese like to double everything that is good? They even have a word for double happiness (囍 called shuangxi), which is often used at weddings.
When you receive a gift from a Chinese, you will notice that it’s always an even number. They would love to give you two boxes of cookies. If you receive a red envelope, you will often see two dollars, twenty dollars, or two hundred. So, if you do business with the Chinese, they will be very happy to accept your offer if you give them an even number.
Do you know there is a secret to making God happy and getting double the blessing? God loves grateful people, and when you give thanks to the Holy One, you get an additional blessing. In fact, it could be worth more than double.
There was once Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one of them came back to thank Jesus. The Bible says that he praised him with a loud voice and prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet, and thanked him.
Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.” (Luke 17:17-19).
You might wonder why Jesus said, “Your faith has made you well,” as if he was getting an additional blessing. The word “well” is translated from Greek σώζω (sṓzō), meaning “safe and sound” See, there is one thing you are healed, but another to be safe.
In other words, this leper was not only healed but also given an immunization from getting sick again in the future. He got a double blessing. You might say it’s more than a double blessing because being safe and sound for a lifetime is more than one-time healing.
I agree. Still, the secret is in thanksgiving. Those nine lepers might enjoy the healing, but they missed out on a lifetime deal for not showing their gratitude.
So, this Thanksgiving, let’s show our gratitude to God and receive a double blessing. In fact, we should not just give thanks at Thanksgiving. We need to practice it all the time because, according to psychologists, “the attitude of gratitude is the healthiest emotion.”
This pandemic has affected all of us, at least emotionally. Let’s keep a healthy emotion by maintaining an attitude of gratitude.
